What about their families, one may ask,” was the poser from Justice Wadhwa to Nalini’s counsel. Justice Quadri, who held the decisive card after Justice Thomas and Justice Wadhwa were divided over award of death sentence to Nalini, appeared torn between emotion and the duty of a judge. “Indeed the dilemma whether sentence of death should be pronounced upon a woman has been troubling my mind for a considerable time. Surely in our culture, a woman has to be treated with beneficence and kindness,” he confessed. “But then in this case the person Dhanu who opted to become a human bomb was a woman. Subha, who gave moral support to sacrifice her life on the anvil of some ideology and to end up annihilating other lives, was also a woman,” he said clarifying the issue factually. “It was not the case that Nalini was caught up in a sudden situation and became a mute comrade — the mind not towing the body. It was indeed the other way round. The part played by Nalini is a candid participation in the crime of conspiracy to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi who was himself a young popular leader so much loved and respected by his fellow citizens and had been PM of India,” Justice Quadri said. “Nalini, in spite of being an Indian citizen, joined the gang of conspirators and engaged herself in pursuit of common intention to commit crime only because she was infatuated by the love and affection developed for Murugan, and thus played her part in execution of the conspiracy which resulted in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi and death of many police officers and innocent citizens including a small girl,” he said and agreed with Justice Wadhwa that she be awarded death penalty as there was no room for leniency, kindness and beneficence for Nalini in this case.

Any person who was in the conspiracy of Killing Rajiv Gandhi should not be left out. It is the ambition of all people of India.

Everyman, when he chooses a function, must do it to the best of his capacity and with an eye on social good and it is the Varna-Dharma. Every individual must do his duty and the contribution to the social welfare.The duties of the Brahmana [ Brahmins by caste]and other rules of discipline specially devised for them were difficult. The number of brahmanas was and always has been very small. Kshatriyas, were men of action and enjoyed the unique privileges in social organization, study and meditation were compulsory for them, and several kshatriyas distinguished themselves as philosophers. Vaishyas were the largest group engaged in various wealth-producing activities. They could help the rulers and others in their duties. A vaishya was an expert business-man with a specialized knowledge of jewels, metals, cloth, spices, perfumes, trades and crafts. The Shudras were labourers doing hard work like agriculture and other duties like cattle-breeding, industry and commerce.The duties of Varna were to ensure social harmony and welfare conduct, and not birth, remained the basis of the Varna system. According to the duties performed by the individuals, the caste name was given like to-days Doctor’s, Engineers etc.,
This cannot be taken as people were divided by caste systems in Vedic period of India.

A man from a small village once went to the next town to buy five donkeys. Since his village was quite remote, he decided to ride back on the sturdiest of donkeys, letting the others follow along. When he neared his home, and to make sure whether all the donkeys were arrived with him, he looked back and counted and discovered that there were only four donkeys. He felt very sad for not paying closer attention during the ride. He arrived his home in a dejected and sorrow mood.

As he was getting of donkey, he told his wife, who had come out to invite him, “ I feel very sad, I bought five donkeys, but somehow I lost one on the way.” The wife looked at him and told him with a smiling face, “ there are not five donkeys, there are six!” including yourself. The husband then only realized that he had forgotten to count the donkey on which he was riding! Similarly, a thing may be within you, but if you do not recognize it, you effectively disown it and go about searching for that very thing. Such a search is foolishness, to be solved only by knowing that the thing is, in fact with you all the time.

Nalini, supporter of LTTE sentenced to death in the assassination case of Rajiv Gandhi, was also awarded capital punishment. Her sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment after Sonia Gandhi pleaded for clemency for the sake of the convict's daughter.

Priyanka Vadra, who has created a surprise by meeting one of the conspirators in her father Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, on Tuesday said she does not believe in anger, hatred and violence and will not allow these to overpower her. It is true that I met Nalini Sriharan in Vellore central jail on March 19, 2008. It was my way of coming to peace with the violence and loss that I have experienced," she said.

Fifteen years after a LTTE suicide bomber killed Rajiv Gandhi in Sriperumbudur, the Tamil rebel outfit on Tuesday admitted its responsibility for the crime and delivered a public apology. In an interview to a TV network on Tuesday, Anton Balasingham, LTTE ideologue and one of Tiger chief Velupillai Prabhakaran's confidants executed a major shift of policy, describing the May 21, 1991, killing of Rajiv Gandhi as "a monumental historical tragedy".

"As far as that event is concerned...I would say it is a great tragedy... a monumental historical tragedy... which we deeply regret, and we call upon the government of India and people of India to be magnanimous to put the past behind... and to approach the ethnic question in a different perspective," Balasingham said.

Asked if the LTTE could promise that it would not commit such acts again, Balasingham added: "We have made pledges to the government of India that under no circumstance will we act against the interests of the government of India."

Thus far, the LTTE has denied that it was responsible for the killing of Rajiv Gandhi. Reacting to the LTTE admission, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh said: "It's good that after so many years they (LTTE) have admitted to having killed Rajiv Gandhi.

For India, it was a national tragedy because Rajiv Gandhi was the most popular leader of his time. Now the question is of fixing responsibility for the crime."


To the world, it was a stunning revelation to learn that Priyanka Vadra had met Nalini, in coimbatore, serving a life term for involvement in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination. For Priyanka, it was an attempt to attain closure, to come to terms with the tragic loss of her beloved father. But how did Nalini feel about the meeting?

According to the account she gave to her brother, it was a singularly emotional encounter. "I feel all my sins have been washed off by Priyanka's visit...I feel she has pardoned me by calling on me at the prison.... I am indebted to her all my life,"

Nalini was found guilty by the CBI and also by the Sri Lankan Govt. She is now lying when she says that she was a culprit of circumstances and is innocent. She should consider herself lucky to be alive still. She will get her punishment in the heavens. God is not Gandhi family. Terrorist’s organizations like LTTE should be destroyed. Attacks on America, and assassination of Benazir the world know the losses due to terrorism. How many more great leaders are we further going to loose? Regret by LTTE is just eye washing and misleading. They can produce more Nalinis. Let the DMK say about the truth as well.
