The 1998 Coimbatore bombings occurred on Saturday, February 14, 1998, in the city of Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India. 46 persons - 35 men, 10 women and one child - were killed and over 200 injured in 13 bomb attacks in 11 places , all of them within a 12 km radius, 4 bombs were planted at R S Puram area, two near Bus Stand, 1 near Coimbatore Medical College Hospital and at Ukkadam area. It was told that these car bombs were the work of Muslim fundamentalist group "Al Umma" which had a strong presence in Coimbatore.


The bomb blast also had strong political implications. The Bharatiya Janata Party candidate C. P. Radhakrishnan won by a record margin of over 1,00,000 votes in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections.


THE final report of the Justice P.R. Gokulakrishnan Commission of Inquiry, which was set up by the Tamil Nadu Government to inquire into the causes of and circumstances that led to the serial bomb blasts in Coimbatore on February 14, 1998, is a stinging indictment of the Coimbatore police. The report says that "it is definite... the lapse on the part of the police personnel, deputed for surveillance and checks, in discharging their duties more vigorously, vigilantly and intelligently" enabled the Al-Umma "terrorists to execute their dastardly plan of planting bombs" that killed 50 persons and injured 200.


Now at MADURAI, Tamilnadu Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L K Advani will continue his Jan Chetna Yatra on Friday 28-10-2011 , but possibly with a minor change in the route after explosives were found under a bridge at a village near here, the party said.


A crude 6 feet long pipe bomb was found under a bridge at Alampatti village on the outskirts of Madurai city hours before Advani's janchetana yatra was to pass through.


Local people discovered the pipe bomb, filled with some sort of explosive material with long wires jutting out and informed the police. The bomb was removed and police carried out extensive searches along the route.


Advani's Jan Chetna Yatra, aimed at fighting black money and corruption, started on Oct 11 and will end on Nov 20.

During the Tirupur Mayor Election propaganda meeting, Manian described Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister Jayalalitha as olden day’s queen. Whatever manian says is correct or not, the olden days emperor Karunanidhi, in 2006 local body elections, instructed all his men to capture the Vote Booths and the public were threatened by rowdies and they themselves voted for their party candidates. Now the public, to educate a lesson for DMK, they have now voted for AIADMK.


There is no doubt in MDMK leader Vaiko is a great personality, who is sincerely working for the uplift of our Tamil brethrens in Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka. But even in his party itself some leaders betrayed Vaiko and went to DMK. Now the people themselves took a decision to vote for AIADMK with a hope that it will improve their living conditions. After a few days, when Narakasura got a chance, he took aim at Krishna, hurting him lightly. Krishna fainted in a preordained, divine plan adopted to empower Satyabhama. Seeing this, Satyabhama was furious. She doubled her attack on the demon king and killed him finally. Before Narakasura's death, he requested a boon from his mother, Satyabhama, that everyone should celebrate his death with colorful light. Thus this day is celebrated as the first day of Diwali - 'Naraka Chaturdashi'

The ruling AIADMK in Tamil Nadu appears all set to sweep the local body elections, leading in all the 10 corporations and a majority of the municipalities and town panchayats. In Chennai, AIADMK’s mayoral candidate Sadai Duraisamy beat his nearest rival, the DMK’s M Subramanian. “It is the biggest ever victory Chennai has seen. It is an endorsement of Amma’s welfare schemes,” said an elated Duraisamy.


Thanking the voters of Tamil Nadu for giving her party a massive victory in both the by-election to the Trichy-West constituency and the local body elections, chief minister J Jayalalithaa said, “We are going to see a prosperous Tamil Nadu through good governance and better administration. We will change the state and set an example to others.” She said the results had shown that the people had given a ‘good’ certificate to her governance. “My hard work will continue,” she said.


Of the 125 municipalities, AIADMK has won 88 and DMK 23. Independents managed to grab five, including Bodinayakanur and Anakaputhur. Congress drew nil in municipalities, while DMDK and its ally CPM shared two each. MDMK and BJP won Kulithalai and Nagercoil respectively. Of the 529 town panchayats, the AIADMK won 284 and the DMK 121.


With the AIADMK sweeping the local body elections, leaving a few posts for the rival DMK, the allies of the two Dravidian majors have been swept to the wayside. The biggest loser is Vijayakanth’s DMDK, a former AIADMK ally which enjoys the opposition party status in the state assembly. While the Congress’ performance has been marginally better than the DMDK, the other former DMK allies, the PMK and the VCK, have fared poorly. The performance of the AIADMK’s erstwhile allies, the CPI and the CPM, has also been unremarkable.


The AIADMK and the DMK distanced themselves from their allies and decided to contest on their own. Expectations were that the elections would be a test of the individual strength of these parties, all of which jumped into the fray. The parties were hoping that their individual performances could also provide leverage while bargaining for seats in alliances for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.


The results also prove that the reach of national parties like the Congress, the BJP and the Left in the state is very limited. Surprisingly, the MDMK has got votes in some pockets. The PMK and the VCK have failed to impress. Analysts pointed out voters were not willing to take risks by voting for these parties as their track record in local body elections have been poor.


It is a lesson for DMk which swept the local body polls in 2006 amid violence and allegations of booth rigging. AIADMK boycotted that election.


For the illegal atrocity done by the DMK in 2006 elections, people have now punished that party by voting for AIADMK with real democratic sense.


Elected members of AIADMK must take the advice of Puratchith thalaivi Amma in redressing the grievances of people and make their wards with cleanliness and set an example to others.

Times of India News paper dated 18-10-2011 states, three Zimbabwean women have appeared in court charged with indecent assault for a spree of sex attacks on male hitchhikers and using their victims’ semen for undisclosed rituals, police said.


“We can confirm that three female and one male suspect were arrested,” national police spokesman Oliver Mandipaka said. Sisters Sophie, 26, and Netsai Nhokwara, 24, and Rosemary Chakwizira, 28, were the first suspects to be charged in connection with a string of sex attacks on men first reported two years ago. They were arrested with a man who said he was boyfriend to one of the women.


In March this year the women sprayed an anesthetic substance on a 19-year-old boy after giving him a lift, according to prosecutor Michael Reza. On August 22, they gave a soldier a lift and forced him to have unprotected sex with them after threatening to shoot him, the prosecutor told the court.


In another case, the trio are said to have stopped next to a policeman, dragged him into their car after pretending to ask for directions and forced him to have sex with them.


For whatever purpose, three girls compelling men for a spree of sex attacks is a great disgrace for the whole world community, and women must realize that there equal right should not go for these indecent activities.

In the 155-member DMK-led Chennai Corporation council, Just 13 councilors attended all its sittings in the last five years till May last. The rest stayed away from one to 20 sittings.


This was revealed from a study of council reports undertaken by Transparent Chennai, a research wing of the Centre for Development Finance, Institute for Financial Management and Research.


The corporation council meets once a month on a date chosen by the mayor, a prerogative given under the Chennai City Municipal Act, 1919. Each councillor who attends gets Rs 800 per sitting and at least 50 members are required for any business transaction to take place.


Those who attended all the 58 meetings held till May are the CPI’s A Subramani (ward 32); deputy mayor R Satyabama, G Jeenat Birhaus (ward 33), J Srinivasan (ward 51), M Kalpana (ward 94), M Samikannu (ward 60), Sivakumar (ward 112), Radha Sambandan (ward 128) and Selvi Soundarajan (ward 146) of the DMK; and Saidai P Ravi (ward 116), P L Kalyani (ward 39), Vembathammal (ward 41) and T R Thulkarnai (ward 28) of the Congress.


Kalyani, the former secretary of the Congress’s north Chennai unit, never missed a single session — either at Ripon Buildings or at the zonal offices. Thanks to her representations, she says, Arundathi Nagar, in her ward, got power supply after four decades, the garbage yard there turned into a play-field, concrete roads were laid and houseline sewerage connections provided to for 400 families at Rs 100 each. “All this was because I managed to grab the attention of the council on every possible occasion,” she says proudly.


Many, sources said, signed the register and vanished. In the zero hour debate, several civic issues can be raised but most councilors, especially ruling party members, prefer to remain silent.


Some even avoided the monthly ward committee meetings in the zonal offices. Of the 45 sessions in the Pulianthope zone in the last four years, the corporation’s reply said, two councilors attended just one each.


Before voting, People must get an assurance from the candidate standing for councilor election that he will attend the council meeting without fail and will raise his voice for the betterment of his Ward, without any fear.

Tamil Nadu, chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Sunday 9-10-2011 took the political battle to ‘Anna Arivaalayam’, the party’s headquarters in the heart of Chennai saying, it stands on “grabbed land”.


Addressing her first public meeting after a long gap since she met voters in her home constituency Trichy to thank them for their sweeping mandate and promising to deliver on her poll promises of freebies, the AIADMK general secretary launched a blistering attack on the DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi who she said was in the habit of “grabbing other people’s land” as early as in 1972. Driving home her point, she then charged that Anna Arivalayam itself was located on encroached land.


She cited the Sarkaria Commission report which had apparently stated that Karunanidhi had usurped 40 acres of land that belonged to a zamindar (landlord) to build what is today the imposing Anna Arivalayam in Chennai.


The landlord was threatened with action under the Land Ceiling Act on not complying with the demand. Former transport minister K N Nehru was only following in the footsteps of his mentor Karunanidhi, and it was no wonder that he had been booked in as many as five different cases of land-grabbing.


“So it is your duty to give another turning point in Tamil Nadu’s politics by defeating such greedy persons by a huge margin,” she said speaking from her van. Just the other day, she had asserted that the former DMK government’s “sooraiyaadal” (ransacking) of Tamil Nadu did not seem to have subsided.


The chief minister arrived Trichy by a special aircraft to introduce her party’s candidate M Paranjothi for the Trichy West assembly by-election, scheduled to be held on October 13.Alluding to Nehru who is contesting the by-election from prison, Jayalalithaa appealed to the crowd “not to concede even the deposit money” to a person who had plundered Trichy district. “No one knows this better than you people,” she said.


For the undemocratic rule DMK has been ousted from the power. Hence Jayalalitha must remember that during 2011 General elections she has given a promise to the people, that she will make Tamil Nadu as a bright city without any power cut. She must stand to her words and also make Chennai as a clean city without Garbage being dumped anywhere causing health problems to the public.

Navratri is divided into sets of three days to adore three different aspects of the supreme goddess or goddesses.In South India, people set up steps and place idols on them. This is known as golu.


First three days The goddess is separated as a spiritual force called Durga also known as Kali in order to destroy all our impurities.


Second three days The Mother is adored as a giver of spiritual wealth, Lakshmi, who is considered to have the power of bestowing on her devotees inexhaustible wealth, as she is the goddess of wealth.


Final three days The final set of three days is spent in worshipping the goddess of wisdom, Saraswati. In order to have all-round success in life, believers seek the blessings of all three aspects of the divine femininity, hence the nine nights of worship.


In some parts of South India, Saraswati puja is performed on the 9th day. Ayudha Puja is conducted in many parts of South India on the Mahanavami (Ninth) day with much fanfare. Weapons, agricultural implements, all kinds of tools, equipments, machinery and automobiles are decorated and worshipped on this day along with the worship of Goddess. The work starts afresh from the next day, i.e. the 10th day which is celebrated as 'Vijaya Dashami'. Many teachers/Schools in south India start teaching Kindergarten children from that day onwards.


During Navrathri, some devotees of Durga observe a fast and prayers are offered for the protection of health and prosperity. A period of introspection and purification, Navratri is traditionally an auspicious and religious time for starting new ventures.
