Due to fear in the mind of voters in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India, they did not turn up in large numbers for the Chennai Corporation by-elections to 67 wards held on Sunday 18-2-2007. In ‘The Hindu” [Dated 19-2-07] India’s largest National News paper, it is stated that despite The Corporation and the Police asking the people “to come and vote without fear “ the Voting percentage was less than 25 percent. Booths across the city wore an empty look for most part of the day.
The opposition party leader J.Jayalalithaa [A.I.A.D.M.K.] alleged that the by election held on 18-2-07 were not conducted in a free and fair manner. M.D.M.K. party leader Vaiko, in a statement, he said the fact that only 30 percent polling was registered in the by-elections had justified his party’s boycott decision in the election.
Whether the ruling Party in Tamil Nadu will rectify itself..?
