Youngsters in our country are the future pillar of India. But this story is different. Seventeen-year-old Prabhu (name changed) was the envy of all the boys in his neighbourhood a couple of months ago, as he zipped around Kolathur on a brand new bike. A few days after he bought it, however, the police came knocking and took the school dropout away.

An investigation revealed that Prabhu had been given the bike for being part of a gang that hacked a driver to death in Anna Nagar. It was his first offence, and the teenager is in prison.

“Going by media reports there is an increase in the number of educated thieves in the 18 to 25 age group,” says Dr M Srinivasan, associate professor, department of criminology, University of Madras. He referred to cases of engineering and MBA graduates being involved in thefts and murders for gain.

A police officer who agrees with this analysis cites the case of a 17-year-old volleyball player who joined a 10-member gang and killed rowdy Chennakesavalu and his lawyer Bhagat Singh near the court complex two years ago. “I was stunned to see him. He had a bright future but had been led to believe that crime was a quick way to make money,” he says.

Though these teens were involved in murder, most young offenders indulge in chain snatching, stealing bikes and cash, and petty theft. “Most crimes by youth are petty,” says S Kannayiram, former field officer of the social defence department. He says these crimes are motivated by the desire for easy money. “There are some genuine cases of children and young people in utter poverty but during some sessions with young people, I realised how status conscious young people have become,” he says.

Early this year, two 10-year-old boys were caught stealing cell phones at Express Avenue mall. The boys led the police to their handlers — two 18-year-olds from Jharkhand. The gang visited the city regularly to steal phones at the mall. Police say older criminals often groom those under the age of 18 as thieves as they will only get a maximum punishment of three years under the juvenile justice act. “They do what they are told without a real idea of what is right and wrong, but they soon get used to crime,” he said.

The increase in repeat offenders among the youth is worrying, says Kannayiram. “They say police foist cases on them, but our system also makes it hard for young people to leave a life of crime,” he says.

Young, first-time offenders end up in the same prison as notorious criminals, who mould them. They leave prison, and re-enter a life of crime. Senior lawyer V Kannadasan said, “First-time offenders should not be allowed to mingle with notorious criminals.”

But it is the duty of our parents; if their children brought any costly things to their house they must enquire the source of the costly Bike or any jewels or any other valuables. They must also watch their wards movement and must know the antecedents of their friends. If parents take little effort in the welfare of their children, then their children will bring fame to their house and country.

In New Delhi Capital of India a city already notorious as India’s rape capital, a 23-year-old physiotherapy student was left battling for her life after being brutally beaten up and raped by at least five drunken men in a private bus which was audaciously driven around south Delhi localities on Sunday night even as the crime was being committed inside.
   

The unconscious victim and her male friend, who too was badly beaten, were stripped and thrown off near the Mahipalpur flyover on NH-8 after being assaulted for almost an hour. They were picked up around 9.15pm, a time when many Delhiites are still out in the city.
   

The woman is on ventilator support, doctors at Safdarjung Hospital said. On Monday, she underwent a four-hour surgery. Doctors said her intestines had ruptured and she had genital injuries. Her friend, a 27-year-old engineer who was preparing to take the civil services exam, however, helped the police in preparing sketches of the accused.
  

 Late on Monday, police arrested one of alleged rapists, Ram Singh, a resident of R K Puram Sector 3. Singh was the driver of the bus but on Sunday had let his brother, Mukesh, drive, police said. Singh has reportedly given the police the names of the six other men in the bus on Sunday night.

“A few years back, a political outfit protested against my film alleging that I promoted smoking. The manner in which they protested might have been wrong, but I felt the issue that they raised was a very valid one. Every leader enters politics only to do good for the people but it is the system that defeats them,” he said.

The actor also blamed smoking to be the cause for his recent health scare. “When I was a bus conductor, I used to drink a lot due to peer pressure. And, when I entered films, the problem got worse and coupled with my long working hours led me to a depressive state. But after my marriage to Latha, I reduced my consumption of alcohol and changed my lifestyle by involving myself in yoga and spirituality. However, I continued to smoke too much which eventually became the root cause for my health problems. My lungs and kidneys got affected and I had to be treated in Singapore. The medicines I took to recover also made me weak and I changed my medicine system. Now, for the past two months, I’ve been hale and healthy and even doctors exclaim that it’s a miracle.” But purely on the well wishes of my, I am having good health.

“This is why I’m asking youngsters and my fans to stop smoking. Please quit the habit immediately,” the Superstar urged his fans. It is also our request the youngsters must leave drinking and smoking and safe guard their family and their own health in good cheerful condition.

is a small town in Karaikal, Tamil Nadu,in the Union
Territory of Pondicherry
(better known in the Tamil language as Puducheri), and can be reached by road
from the town of Karaikal
which lies in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Thirunallar is most noted
for the shrine of Lord Shani (Saturn), Tirunallar Saniswaran
Temple within the temple
dedicated to Lord Darbharanyeswaran, a form of Lord Shiva.

This is the only temple that is dedicated to Lord
(Saneeswaran, in Tamil). Whenever (planet) Saturn transits from zodiac sign
to another (an occurrence roughly every 2.5 years), millions throng this shrine
for worship. The legendary King Nala is said to have been relieved of his
afflictions caused by the malefic influence of Saturn, after worship in this
temple. Of the numerous theertams (sacred bathing places), the Nala theertam is
the most important one. It is believed that by bathing here, one washes off all
kinds of misfortunes and afflictions caused by one's past karmas (in terms of
deities, Lord Shani or Saturn is said to be the dispenser of karmas (both good
and bad), but also one whose Grace, particularly at this shrine, can dispel bad
karmas or, at least, make them bearable).

Once when closing the Temple after all poojas, keys to the temple are ceremonially submitted to Lord Kaala Bhairava at temple closing time and are received from him at opening time. Lord Kala Bhairava is also known as Kshetrapalaka, the guardian of the temple. In honor of this the handing over keys to him was being done.

The vahana (vehicle) of Lord Kaala Bhairava is the dog. Feeding and taking care of dogs is another way of showing our devotion to Lord Kaala Bhairava.

Kala Bhairava Ashtami, which occurs in December/, January, is an important day for worshipping the Lord.

There's a shrine for Lord Kaala Bhairava in most Siva temples. The Bhairava shrine in the Arunachala temple and Madurai and Thakatoor near Thanjavur are very special. The Kaala Bhairava temple in Kasi (Benares) is a must see for Bhairava devotees.

Lord Murugan has six famous abodes in Tamilnadu collectively known as "Aarupadai veedu". Thiruchendur is said to be second in importance among his six abodes. The temple is situated so close to the sea that waves from the Gulf of Mannar lap at the eastern perimeter wall of the temple.

There is a small entrance near the inner sanctum which leads to an area where you can view five lingams called 'Panchalingam'. It is believed that Lord Murugan worshipped one of these lingams which are situated on the left side of the wall. All the offering of 'light' made to the presiding deity is made to this lingam too. The 'viboothi' offered to the devotees here is wrapped in a leaf called 'panneer ilai' in Tamil. This is a special feature in this temple.

On the beach about 200 yards south of the temple, is the Nazhi Kinaru. It is a well 14 sq. feet in area and with a flight of 34 steps. Inside this well there is another small well one sq. feet in extent and seven feet deep. The water in the smaller well is crystal clear and sweet whereas in the bigger well is sulphurous in smell and brackish well is sulphurous in smell and brackish. A bath in the sea as well as in the Nazhi Kinaru is considered to be of much spiritual merit. The Nazhi Kinaru swells up and maintains its level inspite of bailing out any quality of water as the worshippers bathe out of it and get relieved of their sickness.

Thiru Annamalaiyar Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva, located at the foothills of the Annamalai Hill in the town of Thiruvannamalai in Tamil Nadu, India. Shiva is worshipped as Annamalaiyar or Arunachaleswarar represented by lingam, with his consort, Parvati in the form of Unnamulaiyamman. The temple occupies a significant place in Saivism and is regarded as one of the five temples associated with the five classic elements of nature, called the Pancha Bhoota Stalas. The temple is associated with the natural element fire, called Agni and the presiding deity, Arunachaleswarar in the form of lingam is called Agni lingam. The temple is revered by the Tamil Saiva canonical work of the 7th century, the Tevaram, by Tamil saint poets called the nayanars and is classified as a Paadal Petra Sthalam – the temples reverred in Tevaram. It is believed that the 9th century Saiva saint poet Manikkavasagar composed the Tiruvempaavai in the temple.

The Karthigai Deepam festival is celebrated during the full moon day in November–December and a huge beacon is lit on the top of the hill. In Skanda Purana it is stated, the demons under the leadership of Surapadma, Simhamukha and Tarakasura defeated the Devas and took over the earth. They started harassing the human beings and there was Adharma all around.

Lord Brahma, the demi-gods and humans prayed to Lord Shiva to intervene and to put an end to the demons Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati gave birth to Lord Muruga – the most handsome god and the commander of the Devas.

Lord Muraga then appeared to fight the demons and the fight continued for six days and killed all the attendants and friends of demon Surapadman. On the final day, there was intense battle between Muruga and

.Finally, Lord Muruga pierced the body of Surapadma with his Vel (lance). Suddenly, demon Surapadma transformed into a huge mango tree but Lord Muruga cut the tree vertically into two pieces with His Vel.

The two pieces transformed into a peacock and cock. Lord Muruga took the peacock as his vahana or vehicle and the cock was given a place on his banner. This event is popularly known as Surasamharam.

The legend of Narakasura is important in the history of Assam since Narakasura is cited as the progenitor of many dynasties that ruled Kamarupa in historical times. A hill, to the south of Guwahati is named after him. He is also associated with the myth of the shakta goddess and place of worship Kamakhya.

Bhoomi Devi had a son named Naraka. Even though Naraka was the son of a divinity, he had the nature of a demon. Naraka was powerful and he took pleasure in terrorizing the inhabitants of the three worlds.

Narakasura had gained a boon from Brahma that he would die only in the hands of his mother. On the day of the war, Satyabhama with Krishna fought Narakasura bravely, but she was no match to his trained skills. After a few days, when Narakasura got a chance, he took aim at Krishna, hurting him lightly. Krishna fainted in a preordained, divine plan adopted to empower Satyabhama. Seeing this, Satyabhama was furious. She doubled her attack on the demon king and killed him finally.

Before Narakasura's death, he requested a boon from his mother, Satyabhama, that everyone should celebrate his death with colorful light. Thus this day is celebrated as the first day of Diwali - 'Naraka Chaturdashi'

Nayana Kannada actress has attacked a director with chappals at a press conference on Saturday conveyed to promote the film 'Kotlallappo Kai'.

Kannada actress Nayana Krishna and her family suddenly disrupted the press meet by hitting director Rishi with footwear and abusing him with foul language, alleging that he had cheated her of Rs 8 lakh. The director flew from the place immediately with the help of the unit members and later lodged complaint against the actress in the nearby police station.

According to the actress, "Director Rishi borrowed Rs 8 lakhs from me by promising that he would return the amount as soon as possible. However, he didn't pay the amount and coming up with cooked up stories every day".

According to the director, "A few youngsters including me and the actress have joined hands to produce a film. Few weeks back, she demanded me to return her money or to give away the rights of several areas which is worth over Rs 1 crore. I refused to give the rights and told her she will get her money back after the release of the film".

The cops had arrested the actress, 7 others and later released them on bail. Directors before taking money from an actress for investing in their film must be careful to return the money on the due dates otherwise they have to face similar unwanted incidents. Be careful.

Saiva Saints Sambandar, Appar, Sundarar, and Manikkavacakar are specially remembered as the four teachers of the Saiva religion in South India.   They revived and re-established the religious practices, especially the Temple worship, among the common mass and were influential leaders, at a time when Tamil Nadu came to be gripped under the influence of the ascetic missionaries of Jainism  and Buddhism. 

They reclaimed the people and brought them back to the Saiva fold.  The duties of the all mutt heads to teach the people with religious practices according to Saiva or Vaishnava cult.

The pontiffs of 12 mutts in Tamil Nadu are so far doing their religious duties without any contradictions to Saiva sampradhayam except Madurai Aadheenam.  .

Traditionally, the head of the Mutt, in the evening of his life, will appoint one of the many Thambirans (junior monks attached to the mutt) as his successor by giving him the title ‘Ilaya Sannidhanam’ or ‘Ilavarasu’.“But the Ilvarasu would not get the title as head of the Mutt, so long as the existing head is alive,” It was told by protesters,that this is not being followed in Madurai Aadheenam.

A day after India Against Corruption activists, Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan, alleged that real estate developer DLF had given properties worth crores to Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law Robert Vadra for a song, DLF on Saturday refuted the charge saying that neither were unsecured loans given to Vadra nor was he given premier properties at heavily discounted rates.

DLF said it had business dealings with Vadra’s companies but denied that this relationship had led to undue gains for the company or that there was any quid pro quo with the Congress-run government of Haryana for land allotment. The response from the realtor, in the form of questions and answers, came even as several ministers, including finance minister P Chidambaram and law minister Salman Khurshid, rubbished the charges on TV networks.

In a statement, DLF said it had given “business advances” of . 65 crore in two tranches to Vadra-owned company, Skylight Hospitality, which it claimed was “standard industry practice”. It denied that this was an unsecured interest-free loan. The first payment of . 50 crore was made in 2008-09 for a 3.5 acre plot in Gurgaon’s Sikohpur village as part of a total consideration of . 58 crore for the plot. Another . 15 crore was paid to Skylight Group for a plot in Faridabad, but the amount was refunded as the deal did not materialize.

On Vadra purchasing an apartment in the Aralias complex in Gurgaon, DLF said he paid . 11.9 crore in September 2008 at the prevailing market price of . 12,000 per sqft. “We may also mention that while Aralias was initially launched at . 1,800 per sqft, Vadra’s purchase at . 12,000 per sqft is among the highest at which the company sold apartments in Aralias. The alleged figure of. 89 lakh as total purchase consideration is completely incorrect.”

Reacting to allegations of corruption, Robert Vadra on Saturday reassured his well-wishers on Facebook: “Thanks for the concern; I can handle all the negativity. I have lost people I loved…what can be worse than that.” The reply was the first from Gandhi family’s son-in-law since Friday when activists Prashant Bhushan and Arvind Kejriwal accused him of acquiring properties currently valued at 500 crore from DLF. Finance minister P Chidambaram dismissed the demand for an inquiry into Vadra’s assets. Congress spokesman Manish Tewari dubbed the allegations as a “concert between BJP and its B-team headed by Kejriwal”.

External Affairs Minister S.M. Krishna has appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to stop further release of water to Tamil Nadu and to seek a report from the team that has been deputed to assess the water situation.

“I would kindly urge upon you to explore the possibilities of stopping further release of water from dams in Karnataka and also call for an interim report of the team of experts,” Krishna, now on an official visit to the US, said in a letter to Singh, a copy of which was released here.

Krishna hails from Cauvery basin district of Mandya, the epicenter of the stir.

The Minister said that the situation was grim in Cauvery irrigation areas and also in Bangalore following depleted water level in dams after the release of water, as per the September 19 directive of the Cauvery River Authority, headed by Singh, and upheld by the Supreme Court recently.

“I sincerely feel that the situation needs your immediate attention, if it is to be prevented from worsening, as there is already a strong feeling among people of Karnataka that they may have to face severe shortage of water in the months to come,” Krishna said.

Krishna also pointed out that the monsoon was over in Karnataka while the North-East monsoon would commence in Tamil Nadu and has the prospects of adequate rains.

The Karnataka Government began releasing 9,000 cusecs after the Supreme Court asked it to abide by the CRA directive, till October 15.

An IAS officer was arrested at Charbagh railway station here on Monday for allegedly attempting to rape and intimidate a young IT professional in the AC II compartment of Delhi-Lucknow Mail on Sunday night. The UP government immediately suspended the officer, Shashi Bhusan Lal Susheel, who is posted as special secretary (technical education). A railway magistrate later sent him to jail under judicial remand for 14 days.

Given the high-profile status of the accused, the government railway police (GRP) officials at Charbagh reportedly tried to get the two parties to reach a compromise. Even after inspector general (Railways) Ashutosh Pandey instructed the GRP officials to lodge a case, they didn't do so for about four hours. But, after the victim and her family refused to withdraw their complaint, they finally registered a case against Susheel for bailable offences under Sections 294 (eve teasing) and 354 (molestation).

However, sources say that when chief minister Akhilesh Yadav came to know about incident while he was addressing a rally in Hardoi, he intervened in the matter himself ordering Susheel's immediate suspension. To send out a strong message that the government would not, under any circumstance, allow such acts to prevail, the chief minister is also known to have instructed senior officials to take "all necessary punitive action" against the officer, including sending him to jail for his offence.

It was then that additional director general (railways), Gurdarshan Singh, instructed the GRP men to include sections 376 read with 511 (rape and attempt to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life) of the IPC against the accused. Taking a serious note of the police's attempts to water down the intensity of crime, the ADG also transferred the inspector in-charge of GRP Charbagh, Anil Rai, to Gorakhpur with immediate effect. Inspector Girija Shanker Tripathi was posted in his place.

According to reports, the girl and her mother boarded the train at New Delhi and were occupying berth numbers 13 and 14 in AC II coach. Shashi Bhushan entered the coach at Ghaziabad and was on the lower berth (number 15) right opposite them. In her FIR, the girl alleged that after the train left Ghaziabad, the officer tried to start a conversation with her mother. "He kept on looking at me and that left me extremely uncomfortable," the victim said. It was around day break, when the girl was asleep and her mother had gone to toilet, she suddenly woke up to find the IAS officer allegedly trying to outrage her modesty.

She raised an alarm and after her mother returned, they informed the guard on duty. Soon, other passengers of the coach also gathered there. When the victim's mother confronted him, the officer allegedly tried to throw his weight around claiming he was an IAS officer. After a heated exchange, when the victim's mother threatened to call the police the officer begged for forgiveness. However, when the guard arrived on the scene, the officer denied having committed anything wrong and dismissed the allegations as baseless. The guard then left the scene to seek help of the Railway Protection Force jawans to ensure that he did not escape. By the time the guard could return with the RPF jawans, the officer disappeared. On the basis of the description provided by the victim and her mother the guard and the RPF jawans launched a manhunt and traced him sitting in the AC I coach. He was handed over to the GRP Charbagh once the train arrived at Lucknow at around 7am.

Despite the victim adamant on initiating police action against the accused, the GRP personnel tried to hush up the case. They allegedly didn't listen to even their IG initially. It was only when the chief minister intervened that the case of attempt to rape was filed. Thereafter, the officer was produced before the railway magistrate, who sent him to jail under judicial remand for 14 days.

Action taken by U.P. Chief Minister Akilesh Yadhav will ever be appreciated by all the people of India. An I.A.S. officer who is in the highest position of safeguarding people’s welfare should not behave like a criminal.

Menon, an actor and former Miss-India second runner-up in 1994, delivered a girl child in the maternity ward of Nanavati Hospital in Mumbai in front of three cameras on Thursday 27-9-2012.

According to Times of India report, the director had planned the shoot with three cameras on Thursday. The shoot lasted for about 45 minutes and it ended with the actress planting a gentle kiss on the baby’s forehead.

The pregnancy, delivery and the early years of motherhood are to be the crux of Blessy’s upcoming movie Kalimannu. The shoot began when she was five months pregnant. In an age when pregnancy and motherhood is sometimes mechanical, the movie talks about a mother’s relationship with her fetus.

During the shoot, there were 3 members from the film crew present in the room including cinemtographer Jiby Jacob, Shwetha’s husband, Srivalsan Menon was also present during the delivery, which was a natural delivery.

The director and his team reportedly had to do prepare for a week to perfect shooting in the labour room. Both the mother and child were in good health, with the film crew reportedly taking all precautions to ensure they didn’t get in the way.

A Hong Kong tycoon is offering $65 million for any man who manages to woo his lesbian daughter into marriage. Property magnate Cecil Chao Sze-tsung said he is even ready to accept a poor son-inlaw for his 33-year-old daughter Gigi Chao. “I don’t mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted,” the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post quoted Chao as saying.

Restoration of Anna Arch, which escaped demolition after withstanding electric saws and diamond cutters for three days early this month, started on 26-9-2012 Wednesday after chief minister J Jayalalithaa visited the site. Earlier this month, a contractor had been employed to bring down the structure to make way for a Rs. 117-crore flyover-subway project to ease traffic congestion. On the third day of work, the CM ordered that the demolition be stopped and the flyover-subway plan altered. So, there stood the arch, precariously, held by a crane.  Sources said the crane cost the department, Rupees 4 lakh a day by way of rent. “With this cost in mind, the budget for the demolition was 8 lakh as we thought it would be over in two days,” said a highways official. The crane has been in use for 23 days now, the rent adding up to 92 lakh. While the restoration work will take four months, the crane has to be there for at least 10 more days, which means an additional 40 lakh.

On Wednesday, engineers brought two temporary stilts to support the arch, now being held in place by the crane after concrete cutters gnawed at its base. There were traffic snarls in the locality, as a posse of police personnel was deployed near the arch for the chief minister’s visit. In The CM interacted with engineers at the site.

Anna Arch was built in 1985 to commemorate the 75th birth anniversary of former chief minister C Annadurai. The arch was to be removed to make way for a 117-crore of two L-shaped flyovers and a subway, but the decision was stayed by the CM in view of its association with two chief ministers from the past. Now the change in design to accommodate the arch is expected to delay the completion of the project. “The department will take six months to come up with a new design,” said a senior highways official. Model-actor Aritri Bhattacharya and her mother were beaten up and molested in their home in the presence of a politician and realtors in Chandernagore on September 20. Aritri says the attacker stripped her and tried to rape her in front of the gawking crowd but she managed to fight him off.

Police ignored her complaint, although the victims had bleeding injuries. Chandernagore OC Sukhomoy Chakraborty was allegedly reluctant to file an FIR and kept asking Aritri to settle it "mutually". Police arrested the accused only on September 24 but filed mild charges, allowing him to walk free within hours. Now, the accused are threatening an acid attack on her, says the actor.

Aritri, who was among the Miss India Top 22 in 2006, is a familiar face in TV commercials and serials. Three years ago, her family bought a ground-floor flat in Chandernagore where she stays with her parents and husband Mrinmoy. The developers of her apartment, Sumit Sur and Ashis Mukherjee, live in the same complex and have an office on the ground floor, next to Aritri's bedroom. "Every day, the developers and local toughs gather in the office room and create a nuisance," said Jyoti, Aritri's mother.

On the night of September 20, Sur's driver SK Nishad was loitering in front of her flat in a drunken state, she says. "Our main door was open and he was using filthy language over phone. We felt bad and bolted the door," said Jyoti. Nishad was furious and started throwing the actor's garments that were hung out to dry on the narrow passage that leads to the office room, the family says.

When Aritri tried to stop him, Nishad pounced on her, she says. "He hit me with a stick and groped me. He tore my T-shirt and pyjamas," says Aritri. Her mother rushed out to save her but she was also beaten up. "Mukherjee and Sur were there. As were a flock of local politicians. They all stood there and watched Nishad beat us up and molest my daughter," says Jyoti.

The mother and daughter rushed to Chandernagore police station but failed to convince them to register a case. "The next evening, we met the OC, who advised us for a mutual settlement," says Jyoti. On September 22, just when the family was about to contact superior officers, police registered a case against Nishad under bailable sections of the IPC. According to police records, Nishad was arrested at 4.40am on September 24 and got bail within hours.

"Since then Mukherjee, Sur and their aides have been threatening to throw acid bulbs on my daughter. They dropped a senior police officer's name and said they would frame Aritri in a theft case. We are so scared that we have decided to move out from Chandernagore," Jyoti says.

The OC claimed that he had taken "adequate steps according to the nature of the complaint". But he could not explain why the accused was not slapped with graver charges when his investigating officer found that Aritri's clothes had been ripped off.

The Chander-Nagore Police officials must take strigent action against the culprits and they should not fail from their duty insafe guarding the innocent pople.

Because you are going to stay and live with me forever’,” Soraya revealed according to the book Les Proies: Dans le harem de Kadhafi (Prey: In Gaddafi’s Harem). According to the paper, Gaddafi repeatedly raped, beat and urinated on the teenager during her five years in captivity. Sometimes other girls would join them. When another girl performed oral sex on Gaddafi he would tell Soraya to ‘Watch and learn’, the report said.

Vinayaka Chaturthi, is the Hindu festival and it is being celebrated in Chennai in grand manner. It is believed that Lord Ganesh bestows his presence on earth for all his devotees during this festival. It is the day Shiva declared his son Ganesha as superior to all the gods, barring Vishnu, Lakshmi, Shiva and Parvati. Ganesha is widely worshipped as the god of wisdom, prosperity and good fortune and traditionally invoked at the beginning of any new venture or at the start of travel.

The festival, also known as Vinayaka Chathurthi is observed in the Hindu calendar month of Aavani starting on the shukla chaturthi (fourth day of the waxing moon period). The date usually falls between 19 August and 20 September.

While Ganesh Pooja is being celebrated all over India, it is most elaborate in Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Goa, Orissa, Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh. At Tiruchendur Skanda Sashti is celebrated with a unique ritual called Soorasamharam.

Tiruchendur also known as Thiru-Cheer-Alaivai. It is famous as the second of the Arupadai Veedugal or Six Abodes of Lord Muruga. The magnificient temple over the course of nearly 1,000 years has grown from its original modest structure through many additions made by Pandya and Chera kings, and various benefactors.
'Tiruchendur' means a sacred and prosperous town of victory. Notably, the Gopuram or the temple tower is on the West instead of the East as is traditional due to the sea. 

The massive structure is nine storey high and stands at 137 feet. The Gopuram was constructed roughly 300 years ago. The sculpture on the Gopuram chronicles interesting events. For instance, there are scenes from the life of Manikkavachakar. In the ninth storey, a huge bell was fixed by one Mr. Eden, probably the Collector of Tirunelveli from 1832 to 1839. The ringing of the bell indicated the hours of the day. The bell is now not in use because the mechanism is in disrepair.

In the 17th century AD, Tiruchendur temple was occupied by the Dutch for few years and they even looted some of the idols in the temple. Legend has it that the Arumuga Peruman idol was carried away in their ship. There was a sudden storm and the Dutch grew afraid and threw the idol into the sea. Vadamalaiyappa Pillai, an ardent devotee of Lord Muruga saw a vision of the idol's position in his dream. Immediately, he and several other devotees rushed to the spot where as foretold in the dream a lemon was floating and Garuda was flying over the spot. They dove into the sea and recovered the statue.

The temple was originally constructed on the sandstone reefs of the beach, but due to corrosion by the sea the structure began to disintegrate. In early 1900s a sannyasin, Mouna Swami took up the renovation work. This was followed by others over a course of 72 years and the three pragarams were constructed anew in black granite stone.

Festivals.
Thaipusam Festival, Vaikasi Visagam (May - June), Avani festival (August � September), Skanda Sasti Festival - 7 days (October - November) and Masi festival - 12 days (February - March) are the important festival celebrated at Thiruchendur Murugan Temple. Of these, Skanda Sashti is celebrated in a large scale with a unique ritual called Soorasamharam.
