Roads, footpaths and even the skywalk around the crematorium was packed. The entry into the crematorium was “restricted” but that didn’t deter the crowd from blocking the entire area, so much so that police had to resort to mild lathicharge to bring order.
“The only time I saw such a crowd was on Mohamed Rafi and Raj Kapoor’s death. It was crazy. So many celebrities had to push their way through the crowd to reach the crematorium,” Khanna’s business manager Ashwin said.

From Bandra to Vile Parle, people of all ages and from all walks of life braved the rain to join the “eternal romantic hero” as he went on his final journey in an open truck decked with white flowers, his body in a glass coffin.
Elder son-in-law Akshay Kumar, grandson Aarav, ex-wife Dimple Kapadia, daughter Rinkie Khanna and her husband Sameer Saran accompanied him. Aarav performed the last rites of his grandfather.
Celebrities were forced to park their cars and walk in the drizzle as the air was rendered with slogans of “Rajesh Khanna Amar Rahe” and “Alvida Anand”. With strict instructions passed on by Akshay Kumar’s personal security and the police, a few of the celebrities also found it difficult to enter the crematorium.
Karan Johar (his Jaguar parked on [SV Road], Rani Mukherji, Randhir Kapoor, Rajiv Kapoor, Abbas-Mustan, Anil Sharma, Shakti Kapoor and Udit Narayan made it on time for the cremation. A producer who was present at the crematorium said, “People were late for cremation because of the traffic jam and rain. Amitabh and Abhishek walked in when Dimple was about to leave.’’ Dimple stayed till the end but Akshay Kumar and other members of the family left before her.
Like arrival, even the exit was an issue with some like Amitabh and Abhishek hopping on to a police van to go back home, while another actor was seen running to catch a BEST bus.
